At present, over 200 families serve our center as host family volunteers, hosting international guests in a variety of arrangements, including hosting visitors from sister/friendship cities as well as providing one-night stays to foreign Japanese instructors studying at the Japanese-Language Institute.
Your family does not necessarily have to be fluent in a foreign language in order to serve as a host family. All members of your family should, however, be present to provide your guest with a warm welcome when they arrive and must also provide the guest with their own room. Many families keep in touch with their guests long after they have returned to their home country.
Our center currently has over 300 volunteer translator/interpreters assisting with the translation/interpretation of information for daily living and more into various languages including Chinese, Spanish, Korean, German, French, Portuguese, Italian, Indonesian, Tagalog, Malaysian, Thai, Vietnamese and Arabic.
We accept volunteers of various levels, but before requesting assistance from volunteers, we consult with them individually about their availability, the location where the assistance will take place, the content to be translated/interpreted, and whether or not that level of the content matches the level of the volunteer.
We are looking for individuals interested in assisting with various events including lectures introducing foreign culture and aid, volunteer Japanese classes, and consultation services for foreign residents. We require assistance with various tasks including event site management, promotion, and preparation, so if you are interested in international exchange events (and regardless of your qualifications or background), please sign up to be a volunteer.
The International Exchange Center's Youth International Volunteers (composed of teens and young adults) assist with such events as the International Friendship Fair and volunteer seminars. Would you like to become a Youth Volunteer? Contact our center for more details.
